What is Tulsa Derby League?

The Tulsa Derby League is a roller derby league made up of diverse, passionate women willing to train hard, break bones, sweat blood and make magic to build a league of which our community could be proud. Tulsa Derby League also develops self-discipline, character and athleticism while promoting the sport of flat-track roller derby and giving back to the community that supports us. Our intention is to grow and excel as a forward-thinking team of fierce athletic ability, built on the high ethics and integrity established by WFTDA and to flourish in a sisterhood of like-minded clubs and leagues and to serve the sport of flat-track roller derby for the benefit of all.

Who is Tulsa Derby League?

We are just like you. We are regular women of all ages, sizes, lifestyles and backgrounds with careers and families. We also have a ferocious hunger for challenge and adventure and for us that means dedicating ourselves body and soul to roller derby.

Where can I watch TDL?

Our home bouts are at Skates, 401 E. Broadway Ct., Sand Springs, 918 241 2342
(Near Adams Road, just behind the Bank of Oklahoma.)

What can I bring to Skates?

Bring an entire noisy posse, as many as you can pack into the jalopy! Bring cowbells or other noisemakers, but no whistles please. Our bouts are family-friendly (kids LOVE derby) and wheelchair-accessible. We provide seating and programs, but you will need cash for TDL merchandise or either cash or credit card for the ice-cold beer or for refreshments from the well-stocked snack bar (pizza, pop, candy, chips, nachos, popcorn, etc.). There is an ATM on site.

Can I come watch a roller derby practice?

Practices are at Skates on Tuesday nights from 830-1030 pm and on Sunday mornings from 10 am – 1 pm and they are open to the public. You are welcome to observe the torture we happily endure to be able to put on a good game for our fans. Be careful, if you observe, you are more likely to join. The fun is irresistible.

How can I join the team?

You do not have to know how to skate or have roller derby experience. We have the best coaches in Oklahoma and they will instruct you. You just show up to a practice and work your ass off and stagger home full of joy and a budding new obsession. As Fresh Meat, you will train separately from the veteran skaters until you are fit enough to pass the Minimum SkillsTest. Once you pass, you are eligible to practice with the League as well as be on the roster to bout us to sweet victory.

The first two practices are free and you may borrow all the equipment you need (skates, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet), with the exception of a mouth guard. A mouth guard is mandatory and can be purchased at any sporting goods store or online.

After your second practice, if you are a derby girl, you will need to begin paying monthly dues of $30.00, as well as buying your annual WFTDA membership of $65.00 and paying the annual fee for rink usage of $175.00. You will also need to buy your own skates and equipment. The pro-shop at Skates can assist you or you can shop for anything derby online.

However, being a rollergirl is very time consuming. The rewards are phenomenal, but you must put in the hours. Unless you have the time and energy for a part-time job that involves exhaustive physical training as well as fundraising, travel and committees, then derby is not for you. We have a strict attendance policy and every skater must volunteer on at least one committee and participate in some fundraising and PR.

When you fall in love with it and decide to join, we will give you a full copy of the League's rules and policies.

We welcome skaters of all sizes, ages and abilities. Just try it, that's all we ask.

I can't/don't want to skate; how else can I help?

We always need fun, dedicated people to help make our events a success. You can join our team of Zebras-the referees-who really have all the power; or you can be one of the NSOs or “non-skating officials” that do anything from keeping track of penalties to helping with bout setup. Just contact 918.241.2342 for more information on how to get derby girls to suck up and salute you.

We also offer red-carpet treatment at reasonable prices to our beloved sponsors. Contact 918.241.2342 for information on those opportunities. There's one that will fit your needs perfectly, like a handmade custom skate.

If you have an idea/service/suggestion that you would like to share, bring it! We are always interested in improving our teams, league, bouts, PR, sponsorship and fundraising. Contact: tulsaderbyleague@gmail.com with your brilliant ideas.

Are there any other teams in the area?

Yes, there are many! If you're not in Tulsa to join the Tulsa Derby League, check out what will probably be an incomplete list in about ten minutes because teams are forming that quickly: for the Oklahoma City Area: Oklahoma Victory Dolls, oklahomavictorydolls.com, Tornado Alley Roller Girls, okcrd.com, from Poteau: Sisterhood of Steel, sistersofsteel.com, from Lawton: 580rollergirls.com.

I'm with the Press and/or I am an indie photog, can I get free tickets to a bout?

Just contact: TulsaDerbyLeague@gmail.com

 How do I get tickets?

See your favorite derby girl! Or you can buy them online from Brown Paper Tickets, www.brownpapertickets.com , by phone 918.241.2342 or at the door on the day of the bout.
